Creature Mark
The goal of this project was to choose an animal and display certain traits graphically, using design principles. We then had to come up with a phrase and design to represent our graphic translation.
Research
I chose a cat, I have two so I figured I could use them as inspiration. I focused mainly on the personality of cats, not necessarily their looks. Cats are very curious and love to explore, they aren’t here to follow orders.
Sketches
It was important for us to have a few descriptive words to focus on when starting to design our creature. We weren’t allowed to make our animals “cute or cuddly.” I tried to go with a more sharp or moody personality.

Typefaces
After creating our creature, we had to come up with a phrase that made it whole. I chose “look what the cat dragged in.” It emphasizes the curiosity of cats and their desire to explore. To me, cats are classy. I really wanted to use the first typeface, but the point was to stylize the text ourselves. I chose the third typeface, Acumin extra condensed. It has a bold and confident look, is firm and sharp just as my cat is.
Graphic Iterations II
The background and foreground follow the same angle as the cat’s back, along with the phrase itself being angled. The typeface I chose is even and straight, reading well with the other straight lines.
Final Iteration
After trying out a few different views of the cat, I decided on an angular cat with an inquisitive purrrsonality. I focused on making sure all the angles lined up, while using figure ground reversal.
