Poster Project

The goal of this project was to choose an influential person from this area, and display their personality and emotion. We were given specific text to design an event poster.

Research

Bootsy Collins is known as one of the founding fathers of funk. He has a vibrant personality & is always trying new sounds and exploration in his music. Bootsy also started a foundation to educate kids about their dental health and hygene, along with a music studio for kids to be mentored.

Iteration

It was important for us to have a few descriptive words to focus on when starting to design our poster. I chose iconic, psychedelic, talented, & caring. When designing my posters, I wanted one to be more grunge and alternative, with the other being more funkadelic and bright.

After deciding the style of poster I wanted to create, I worked on choosing the heading typeface. For my grunge poster I wanted a bold and condensed font that was easily readable. For my funkadelic poster I looked for a typeface that reminded me of the stereotypical 70’s hippy culture.

Typeface Exploration

Bootsy wears a lot of gold, and his iconic shape is a star. I used a photo of his very cool sunglasses and manipulated it. For my funkadelic poster, I used a scan from a zine I made earlier in the semester. The colors of the letters in my heading were taken from the scan’s colors.

Poster Background Design

My body copy typeface I normally choose last, I like to see what fits with the poster I’ve created. I went with Anton because it is bold & easy to read when small. It also goes with the style of the typeface I chose for the grunge poster.
